UPDATE: AG Provides New Details on Fatal Officer-Involved Shooting in Salisbury
UPDATE: The Maryland Office of the Attorney General (AG) has provided more details on the fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on Sunday evening.
According to the AG’s Office, around 7:00 p.m., officers with the Salisbury Police Department located an adult man they suspected to be involved in the homicide that had taken place earlier in the evening. The suspect was standing near a parked vehicle with an object on the hood in a driveway of a residence in the 700 block of Jefferson Street. Officers confronted the man, giving him repeated commands. The man reportedly refused to comply and reached for the object on the hood. Multiple officers then discharged their service weapons, shooting the man. Officers provided medical aid until EMS arrived on the scene and transported the suspect to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A handgun was recovered from the driveway near the man. No officers were injured during this incident.
The AG’s office says that the Independent Investigations Division (IID) will generally release the name of the decedent and discharging officers within two business days of the incident, although that period may be extended, if necessary, pursuant to IID protocol.
The officers on scene were equipped with body-worn cameras, which recorded the incident. The IID will generally release body-worn camera footage within 20 business days of an incident. There may be situations where more than 20 days is necessary, including if investigators need more time to complete witness interviews, if there are technical delays caused by the need to shield the identities of civilian witnesses, or to allow family members to view the video before it is released to the public.
Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact the IID at (410) 576-7070 or by email at IID@oag.state.md.us.
