‘A reminder of home’: local volunteers send love to troops overseas
MARDELA, Md. — The community is rallying together to get care packages out for active duty ahead of the holiday season.
Operation We Care, CEO and Founder, Jeff Merritt said, “When somebody is deployed somewhere around the world, or they’re stationed overseas, they can’t come home, they can’t be with the family, they can’t be with their friends.”
Operation We Care has been packing care packages for US troops since 2007. Merritt said everyone has a story.
Veteran, Vincent Plank said, “I was a lance corporal in the Marine Corps. Now a civilian as of two days ago.” he added, “Being in Japan for three years, I think it’s amazing to see, like, the level of support that we have back here at home.”
Plank said the packages he used to receive from his mom made all the difference.
“A lot of us had issues being away from family for such a long time, and getting these care packages basically reminded us that we do have a family back home,” said Plank.
His mother, Eliza Aguilar, said, “For so many years I was, you know, you’re that marine mom you’re supporting. You’re cheering on. And for moments like this, like it’s just all inspiring.”
Over 18 years, Operation We Care has put together 39 thousand care packages.
“You know, it’s an opportunity for the community to come together, work together and show support for our men and women who’re serving overseas,” said Merritt.
The community gives thanks to our troops and all that they sacrifice.
“They’re out there fighting for us and our freedoms every day. It’s minimal on our end, but the impact is just massive, and that’s what I love about it,” said Aguilar.
A little girl named Savannah donated over 5000 items to Operation We Care. She shared a parting message for US troops, “I want them to know that we’re all really happy that they said that they protect us.”
They are sending out over 100 boxes in the next few weeks for the holidays.
