Woman in Critical Condition after being Struck by Car in Seaford

SEAFORD, Del. – The Seaford Police Department is investigating a serious vehicle-pedestrian crash that occurred on Sunday night.

Officers report that at approximately 11:22 p.m. on Oct. 12, a female pedestrian was walking northbound along the southbound shoulder of Sussex Highway near the Days Inn. She was struck by a 2014 black Infiniti QX60 traveling southbound on the shoulder. At this time, police are unsure whether the vehicle had been traveling on the shoulder before the collision, or if it drifted from the roadway into the shoulder before striking the pedestrian.

After the collision, the vehicle continued into a grassy area, struck a fire hydrant, and then struck a ditch embankment, overturning multiple times before coming to its final resting point. The vehicle was occupied by an adult female driver and three children. None of the occupants were injured, and the children were released to a family member at the scene.

The pedestrian sustained life-threatening injuries and was initially transported to TidalHealth Hospital before being transferred to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where she underwent emergency surgery. She remains in critical condition.

The operator of the vehicle was administered field sobriety testing and a blood draw. The case was reviewed with the Delaware Department of Justice and remains an active investigation. Anyone with additional information about the accident is asked to please contact the Seaford Police Department at (302) 629-6645.

The Seaford Police Department reminds all motorists to stay alert while driving at night, and to avoid driving on shoulders, except in emergencies. Pedestrians are encouraged to use sidewalks, designated crossings, wear reflective vests, and use flashlights whenever possible.
