Wicomico Health Dept. Giving Out Handgun Lock Boxes

SALISBURY, Md. – The Wicomico County Health Department announced on Thursday that a new safe storage program will be launching after receiving a grant from the Maryland Department of Health Center for Firearm Violence Prevention and Intervention.

The Safe Storage Program aims to prevent gun-related injuries and deaths by providing free gun storage devices and raising awareness of safe storage practices. Keeping guns in a lock box or safe prevents unauthorized people, including children, from accessing them, preventing accidental shootings, suicide, homicide, and theft.

The program will offer free gun storage devices and information at pop-up community events throughout Wicomico County. Devices will include lock boxes, carrying cases, and cable locks. No ID is required to receive a storage device.

The next pop-up will be on Saturday, Oct. 25, from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Westside Volunteer Fire Department.
