Wicomico County Council meets to discuss the 287G agreement with ICE

SALISBURY, Md. — The Wicomico County Council is meeting tonight to discuss updates to its 287g partnership with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Wicomico County Council President John Cannon reiterated that the 287g program is a secondary measure allowing the Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office to check whether an individual has any violations in the federal database when they are arrested. ICE then has 48 hours to decide on further action.

Cannon said the goal of the meeting is to clarify the council’s role in the partnership. “We want to determine if the council needs to sign off on the agreement or if it is strictly between the federal government, the executive, and the sheriff,” he said.

“The main focus is for everyone to understand their responsibilities and roles,” Cannon added. “From my perspective, Wicomico County’s role in the ICE program and 287g agreement would be a very passive one.”

The council meeting started at 6 p.m. This is an ongoing discussion, and updates will be provided as the potential 287g agreement develops.
