SALISBURY, Md. Halloween candy prices are haunting people’s budgets this year. Locals say the treat is costing more, but it’s worth it for the season’s spooky fun.

Local resident Briana said, “It’s sad because all the good candy is super expensive, but it’s once a year, so we’ll pay it for once a year.”

As the spooky season arrives, Halloween is haunting wallets. Trina Stanford, another local, shared, “Candy prices are outrageous. However, Halloween’s coming around. We understand the kids definitely want to benefit, but we want to make sure that everybody is able to get some.”

Many are willing to fill their candy bowls but aren’t fans of the sweet price tags.

Bill Chambers, CEO and president of the Salisbury Chamber of Commerce, said, “You’re going to see lower-priced candies in a lot of trick-or-treat baskets this year—gummies, pretzels, things like that. I think with the chocolate prices the way they are, you’ll see significant decreases in consumer spending.”

Chambers said several factors are driving candy inflation, including a poor cocoa-growing season in West Africa, where most of the world’s cocoa is produced. The cocoa is then shipped to manufacturers like Hershey. He added that candy prices have risen about 20% over the past two years, and it’s not just candy seeing the increase.

“The government shutdown and economy are adding to the big cauldron of issues,” Chambers said.

Stanford said she is willing to pay the price for the kids. “We’re going to have to find some really good discount stores, but I’m willing to participate. I love kids and I love to make sure that they’re happy. So that’s all that matters.”

Chambers also noted that while tariffs have not yet impacted candy prices, they could in the future. “If these Trump tariffs go through, companies like Hershey, which make a lot of candy, are going to pass those costs on to consumers, and it will be significant.”

For those looking to save, discount stores are offering deals. Dollar General is running a 2-for-$10 deal on select Mars Halloween variety bags, while supplies last. Until October 11, shoppers can also buy two select Hershey’s Halloween bags and get one free. Target is offering a buy-one-get-one 50% off deal on select candy.

Chambers also noted that while tariffs have not yet impacted candy prices, they could in the future. “If these Trump tariffs go through, companies like Hershey, which make a lot of candy, are going to pass those costs on to consumers, and it will be significant.”
