SEAFORD, Del. — Police in Seaford are warning drivers to stay vigilant following a sharp increase in vehicle thefts, with certain makes — particularly Kia and Hyundai — being heavily targeted.

Officials say the rise in thefts appears tied to a wave of online videos showing how to start these vehicles without a key, exploiting a known vulnerability in some older models.

“These are often crimes of opportunity,” said Deputy Chief Tyler Justice of the Seaford Police Department. “We’re seeing cars stolen from neighborhoods, usually in poorly lit areas. Many of these vehicles are left unlocked, or with valuables visible.”

Authorities are urging drivers to take preventative measures. Recommended steps include parking in well-lit areas, always locking doors, removing valuables from plain sight, and never leaving keys inside the vehicle.

In response to the trend, Kia and Hyundai have rolled out software updates and wheel lock programs. Police are encouraging owners to contact their dealerships for more information.

“Say something if you see something,” Justice added. “If you see people walking through neighborhoods pulling on car doors or rifling through vehicles, call 911 immediately.”

The department says community awareness is one of the most effective tools against these thefts. Residents are being asked to remain alert and report any suspicious behavior as investigations continue.
