Salisbury University proposes new pedestrian tunnel

SALISBURY, Md. — Salisbury University is looking to make walking to and from class less of a traffic headache. The school is seeking to construct a second tunnel underneath U.S. Route 13.

The goal is to make walking between main campus and east campus safer for students. A tunnel already exists near Bateman Street, but the university is proposing that another be added near Dogwood Drive.

University officials say SU has proposed the idea to the Maryland Department of Transportation as part of Wicomico County’s “wish list” of priorities for multiple years.

“The whole idea behind the tunnel, which may or may not ever happen, is that it would enhance pedestrian safety for students. There’s also a backup proposal which would see a crosswalk, some signage, and a pedestrian signal. So, a tunnel, we think, would be the best solution, but it’s not the only solution,” University spokesperson Jason Rhodes said.

Students tell us that crossing Route 13 can be very difficult and dangerous, saying adding a second tunnel would add to their peace of mind. Right now, they have to cross the highway or use the tunnel to reach Seagull Stadium and the rest of the university’s athletic fields.

“It’s pretty impossible honestly. I’ve almost been hit by cars multiple times just trying to cross the road, and especially by the auto zone down there it’s very hard to get across the road. So yeah, I’d say that it is difficult,” said SU student Logan Probst.

Salisbury University students tell us that another tunnel would also help with traffic, and hopefully encourage more students to walk to and from class instead of driving.
