Salisbury Police Department seeks new recruits

SALISBURY, Md. — The Salisbury Police Department is looking to bolster its ranks, offering competitive pay and benefits in an effort to attract new officers.

Chief David Meienschein said the department is “hurting for people” and is searching for individuals who feel a strong desire to serve their community.

“We know they’re out there,” Meienschein said.

The department is offering starting pay just above $57,000 per year. Additional benefits include participation in the Maryland Law Enforcement Officers Pension System, a uniform and equipment allowance, and a cash sign-on bonus for certified officers and those with college degrees.

Meienschein also emphasized the department’s supportive, close-knit culture.

“It’s like a family,” he said. “You come to our agency, and we’re going to treat you like family. That’s how it should be.”

Officers like Patrolman First Class Aaron Barclay say the dynamic is one of the biggest draws. Barclay, who has served with the department for four years, said he enjoys working in his hometown and is committed to the job.

“These men and women work very hard,” Barclay said. “Each call can be extremely dangerous, but it can also be extremely rewarding.”

Meienschein, who has been with the department for 38 years, hopes others will follow in Barclay’s footsteps.

“We want to prove that this is a great, honorable profession,” Meienschein said. “I can’t picture myself doing anything else.”

The department is also seeking dispatchers.

In addition to competitive pay, the department offers education incentives, life insurance, and other benefits.

We’re told the city is also in need of dispatchers.

For police, the agency also offers education incentives, life insurance, and other benefits.
