PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – The University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) announced the institution’s largest ever gift on Friday — a $38 million donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott.

This is Scott’s second donation to the university, as she previously donated $20 million to UMES five years ago.

“MacKenzie Scott’s support affirms our mission and our progress,” said President Heidi M. Anderson in the announcement. “It recognizes the hard work of our students, faculty, staff, and alumni – and it validates the lofty goals we’ve set together: removing financial barriers to completion, elevating research that solves real problems, and ensuring UMES graduates launch into great careers and lives of purpose.”

The school says they plan to use the funds towards expanding need-based scholarships, interdisciplinary research, strengthening advising and other campus services, and launching community-based initiatives to create more internships and job opportunities on the Shore.
