National Teen Driver Safety Week

SALISBURY, Md. — Oct. 19-25 is National Teen Driver Safety Week.

Traffic accidents remain one of the leading causes of death for teenagers in the United States. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that 2,611 people were killed in crashes involving a teen driver in 2023.

The Wicomico County Sheriff’s Office is reminding teens to drive safely and encouraging parents to set a good example for their children.

“There is an uptick in the number of teen fatalities during our holiday season. And certainly, in the spring, during prom and graduation, we see a huge increase in the number of teens who are seriously injured or killed across the country. It’s always a concern of ours,” said Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis.

With winter just around the corner, parents should advise their teens on how to handle slippery conditions.

As more teens prepare to take their driving tests, remind them to keep their hands on the wheel, eyes on the road, and minds on driving.
