Maryland signs $340 million agreement to restore Chesapeake Bay

New Agreement On The Bay

MARYLAND. – Maryland Governor Wes Moore has announced a $340 million agreement with Constellation Energy.

The move continues operations on the Conwingo Dam in Cecil County. One of Maryland’s largest sources of renewable power, that leads into the Chesapeake Bay.

The goal is to improve water quality along the bay on the Western and Eastern Shore. This includes tackling pollution, restoring aquatic habitats, and expanding clean energy.

The $340 million will be used over the next 50 years. That is roughly just above $6 million dollars annually.

Robert Newberry, who leads the Delmarva Fisheries Association, told WMDT the agreement’s specifics don’t fully aid local fishermen. “My major concern being there is nothing, and I want to emphasize nothing in that contract about striped bass or the oysters we have a problem with.”

Members of his Association and other fisheries across the East Coast will be in Dewey Beach in late October for a Atlantic-States Marine Fisheries Commission regulations meeting.
