Lewes Woman Drives Car into Red Mill Pond
LEWES, Del. – The Delaware State Police have arrested a woman on DUI charges after she drove her car into Red Mill Pond on Thursday night.
At approximately 10:12 p.m. on Oct. 2, troopers responded to Edgewater Drive for a report of a capsized boat in Red Mill Pond. Upon arrival on the scene, police found an occupied Dodge Durango about 50 feet out in the pond.
Crews from the Lewes Fire Department were dispatched to conduct a water rescue for the driver of the vehicle. Two rescue swimmers were deployed, and no other subjects were located in the vehicle. Units stayed on scene to assist the towing company in removing the vehicle from the water.
When troopers spoke to the driver, they reported she showed signs of impairment and refused to take standardized field sobriety tests. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Durango was traveling on Edgewater Drive when it drove through a vacant lot and into Red Mill Pond.
The driver, a 56-year-old woman from Lewes, was taken to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. After being released from the hospital, she was arrested for driving under the influence.
