High tides bring unprecedented flooding to Bowers Beach
BOWERS BEACH, Del. — Residents in Bowers Beach are seeing some of the highest water levels in recent memory as a combination of high tides and strong winds have caused widespread coastal flooding along Delaware’s shoreline.
Unlike other nearby areas that experienced only localized street flooding, Bowers Beach was hit especially hard. Powerful winds and relentless wave action pushed tides well above normal, inundating yards, soaking porches, and eroding parts of the beach.
“The height of the water and the rise of the tide coming in — I’ve just never seen it this high,” said Dane Walker, a visitor caught off guard by the conditions. “It’s kinda crazy. If you look over here, you can see about five or ten feet more of the sandbank is missing.”
Officials say the conditions are being driven by a combination of seasonal high tides and a coastal weather system pushing water inland. The beach community is no stranger to tidal flooding, but residents say the extent of erosion and water intrusion this time is unusual.
High tide is expected to peak again Monday evening, and forecasters are warning residents to prepare for another potential surge.
Local emergency officials are monitoring the situation closely.
