Elderly Man Killed in Millsboro Car Accident

Fatal Crash

MILLSBORO, Del. – Delaware State Police are investigating a fatal crash that ultimately killed one on Friday morning.

At approximately 11:00 a.m. on Oct. 24, a Mazda CX-5 was stopped in the westbound lane on Millsboro Highway, west of Mumford Road, waiting to turn left into a private driveway. For reasons still under investigation, an Oldsmobile Ciera behind the Mazda attempted to pass the Mazda on the left as its began turning into the driveway. The Oldsmobile swerved left to avoid a collision, exited the south edge of the roadway, and struck two garbage receptacles before crashing into the left side of the Mazda. The impact subsequently forced the Mazda into a standing tree.

The driver of the Mazda, a 69-year-old woman from Millsboro, was transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries and later released. Her passenger, 73-year-Gary Cooney of Millsboro, was transported to an area hospital with serious injuries. On Saturday, Oct. 25, he died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The driver of the Oldsmobile, a 34-year-old man from Millsboro, Delaware, was not injured.
