DelDOT Announces New Speed Camera in Work Zone on SR 1
LEWES, Del. – The Delaware Department of Transportation (DelDOT), in partnership with the Delaware State Police, announced on Tuesday that a new speed camera will be installed in the construction zone of southbound State Route 1 in the Lewes area.
The Electronic Speed Safety Program (ESSP), better known as a speed camera, will be active in the Minos Conaway Road Grade-Separated Intersection work zone starting on Tuesday, Oct. 21. Signage warning drivers of the speed camera, will also be placed on Route 1 south in advance of the work zone along with radar speed signs. The first 21 days of activity will serve as a warning period, with motorists incurring no violations.
Beginning Tuesday, Nov. 11, registered vehicle owners receiving a first offense will receive a base violation of $20. An secondary amount is added for each mile per hour over the posted work zone speed limit of 50 miles per hour, in accordance with state laws. Second and subsequent offenses are higher, but no points will be assessed to driver’s licenses as these are civil penalties. Additionally, there is a work zone fine applied, in which the sum total of the base fine and the additional speeding fine is doubled.
“Safety is a priority for DelDOT, especially in work zones where workers are most vulnerable,” said Delaware Secretary of Transportation Shanté Hastings. “Electronic speed enforcement in other work zones has reduced crashes and lowered average speeds. We expect similar results in the Route 1/Minos Conaway work zone which will be active for the next few years. Please remember to buckle up, slow down, pay attention and be patient.”
