Cape field hockey maintains momentum with shutout victory on senior night

LEWES, Del. – Cape field hockey beat Newark Charter 3-0 on Tuesday night in Lewes.

The Vikings struck first with an early goal from Alysa McCarthy in the first quarter, before extending their lead to three goals with tallies from Atia Sabbagh and Emily Wells.

A scoreless second half cemented the victory for Cape on senior night.

After the game, Cape Head Coach Kate Austin praised her team’s performance. “I am really proud of what our team put on the field today. We’ve had a couple of struggles lately, not in keeping possession–we’ve done a really good job of keeping possession, but we’ve had a hard time scoring and capitalizing inside of the circle,” Austin said, “And today we just put the pieces together and [Newark Charter] are a great team…and it was really nice to get a win against a quality program, especially at this point in the season.”

The five seniors on Cape’s 2025-26 roster were honored with a ceremony after the game: Avary Miller, Alysa McCarthy, Regan Best, Norah Block, and Isabella Mekulski.

On those seniors, Coach Austin said, “They’re fun, but they’re gritty and they just all bring different personalities to the table. And they’re competitive, and they work hard and they’re smart kids and they’re good kids, and they’re just a really fun group of people to be around. And they contribute to the program–obviously on the field–but just in their leadership and in the personality that they bring to the game, and the fun that they want to have, and just their love for the sport that they play.”

The Vikings move to 12-1 with the win, their next game coming at Caesar Rodney on Thursday, October 16 at 4 p.m.
