After the Whistle: Worcester Prep’s Dawson Davis
BERLIN, Md. – Worcester Prep traditionally has been one of the best high school golf programs on the Eastern Shore, but this year the team made history behind one of their senior co-captains.
“I’ve been playing since I was five,” Dawson Davis recalled. “You know, started with my dad taking me out to the course, just chip shots, going wherever he went, basically.”
Davis has been out on the links for almost as long as he can remember. But he could tell you the exact moment he fell in love with the game, when he was 13 years old: “I was playing with my friend and his dad and my dad, and it was the second hole. 115 yards, [I] hit like a seven iron. It was my first hole in one. So after that moment, I started taking it more seriously because, I mean, that was the moment I knew I want to play golf, just cause of that feeling, the hole in one.”
From that early high-water mark, it’s a been a steady climb for Davis as he’s continually developed across his Worcester Prep career. “Freshman year, I’m shooting low-mid 40s and then sophomore year, low 40s, junior year, 30s. And this year I’ve shot below par multiple times. So, each year I’ve progressively gotten better,” he said.
That progression culminated not just in another ESIAC golf championship this season, but a record-breaking performance for Davis and his team. The Mallards’ 2025 squad etched their names in the history of the program, with Davis himself shooting a career-best 35 across 9 holes. “We wanted to beat the record. And a couple weeks ago, we were out here on this course, and we shot a 143. A total of one-under through four golfers, which was insane.”
As the senior now turns his attention toward college, he leaves Worcester Prep knowing he’s written another chapter in the legacy of the school’s golf program. “I feel so much honor being able to play for this team…And I mean, it’s just not a better feeling than being able to win. You know, I love winning, like everybody. So it’s just so I feel so honorable to be on this team,” Davis said.
