A haunted history on the shore

SALISBURY, Md. — Chesapeake ghost tours is showing all the spirited spots right in downtown Salisbury.

Ghost tour guide, Michael Day said, ” I love to tell people when people ask me, I say, Did you know there were two graveyards in downtown Salisbury?”

Between hidden graveyards, Poplar Hill, and two supposedly haunted firehouses, Salisbury is filled with ghost stories, some dating back to the 1700s. He said the story of Katie Adkins and Elmer Heath is one of infamy.

“She was buried in that in that graveyard and tells a story of how he murdered her and they were lovers engaged to be married.” he said.

In Princess Anne, there’s also a story of a hotel cook bringing over food to firehouse, “they feel her still to this day coming into the firehouse and the firemen have actually told us they will not go upstairs at night in that firehouse to this day.”

Chesapeake Ghosts founder, Mindie Burgoyne said she wrote her first tour in 2013 with the goal of telling history through the stories. “Then you go there now and say, is anything going on? Is it active? And if if a site filled all three of those things, then it would go on the tour.”

Today, she has 10 different tours on the shore and said she was inspired by a haunting experience of her own at a place she once lived.

“It was not fun to live there. It was very active and it was disturbing.” said Burgoyne.

Burgoyne said the spooky stories on the Shore are endless.

“All of our ghost tours are related. The even the ghosts are related.” she added, “In fact, it’s the largest heritage trail in America of related walking tours, and they span 80 miles.”
