Worcester County almost at 100% high-speed internet coverage
WORCESTER COUNTY, Md. – Worcester County is almost at 100%, specifically for high-speed fiber internet.
The county has been applying for grants, working with state partners, and internet providers. They’ve been in contact with multiple companies, including Choptank Fiber and Simple Fiber.
Officials say they’ve formed positive relationships, which should help locals for years.
With the abundance of farmland, service has been weak. in 2020, the county worked with the FCC on a report to identify potential challenges of improved internet.
Weston Young, Chief Administration Officer, says this has been a priority for years.
“Worcester County, and the county commissioners, have been very aggressive in trying to obtain grants, and we even put some of our own funding towards bringing high- speed fiber broadband,” said Young. “We’ve pursued every avenue that we can, the fact we’re nearing 100% is really exciting.”
Young said the state classification of high-speed broadband could be fixed mobile wireless. Those are your 4g and 5g options.
If the state deems that internet sufficient, the county could face potential issues receiving further grant funding.
