Verizon brings high-speed internet to Smith Island

SMITH ISLAND, Md. Smith Island is getting a significant boost in services with help from Verizon. Residents can now feel more connected to mainland Maryland through a new broadband internet connection.

Ian McKeldin, Verizon’s associate director of network operations, said the expansion takes things to the next level for islanders.

“It’s great to hear the simple things you can do with high-speed internet that we take for granted. Just from watching your favorite movie or TV show, or getting on FaceTime, those are things you couldn’t do here before,” McKeldin said.

Smith Island residents expressed relief over the availability of new high-speed internet and mobile services. Shanon Abbott, who uses the internet for work, said she finally feels at ease.

“It’s a huge step, because in the world in which we live, when the emphasis is placed on connectivity, we don’t want to be left behind,” Abbott said.

Officials from Maryland and Somerset County visited the island Wednesday. Gov. Wes Moore emphasized his goal of ensuring no Marylander is left behind.

“We learned that during our first days of military training, the idea that we leave no one behind. That mission’s accomplishment depends on bringing back all your people with you,” Moore said.

A table was set up for residents seeking services, courtesy of Verizon representatives. Maryland Secretary of Housing and Community Development Jake Day said he hopes the services will make life on the island more efficient.

“Eddy from Smith Island United called me the other day from his boat and said, ‘I think this is the first time I’ve ever been able to make a cell phone call from my boat,’” Day said.
