Soybeans Are Crunched For Time

Quantico, Md – Wicomico County has just been awarded over $1 million in federal funding to support Phase II of the Pirate’s Wharf Park Development Project.

Pirates Wharf Park, which opened to the public in 2023, features scenic walking trails, a playground, and views of the Wicomico River.
With Phase II of the project underway, county officials say the best has yet to come.

Steve Miller, Director of Wicomico County Parks and Recreation, said he is excited to add new features to the park that weren’t included in Phase I.

“Phase two is most of the waterfront parts of the project. So that will be a new single lane boat ramp, it’ll be a fishing pier, and then multiple observation decks,” Miller said.

With new public water access, the county will be able to offer more educational programs and opportunities for the community to get involved.

“One of our biggest things was community involvement and making sure we’re providing spaces for people to go and do things,” Wicomico County Executive Julie Giordano said.

Residents aren’t the only ones who will benefit from the park’s upgrades. The local wildlife will, too, with more space to thrive.

“We’ve got long term plans to plant about 20 acres of trees. We’re trying to plant some meadows out there, so we have some different habitats. You’ve got the river, and there’s a little pond back there. There are multiple different areas that I think would be great for educational type opportunities,” Miller said.

Officials said visitors will notice new signage that highlights the parks ecosystem and the county’s rich history.

“We’re hoping to include some interpretive signage that, you know, maybe if you’re not part of a class, but you’re just out there, you can learn about that environment,” Miller said.

Wicomico County hopes to open water access by the end of 2025, and complete Phase II of the project by September of 2028.
