The Lower Shore is going purple with the Shorebirds
SALISBURY, Md. — The Shorebirds and the Lower Shore are going purple to support National Recovery Month.
Mike Trader, director of planning and quality services for the Worcester County Health Department, said, “September is National Recovery Month, and with that, we are launching the Go Purple campaign here locally.”
Juleanna Willis, overdose prevention coordinator for the Wicomico County Health Department, said, “We’re teaming up with Worcester Goes Purple as well. We’ll be at the Shorebirds Stadium starting at 6:30 p.m., so come on out. It’s a family-friendly event with free fireworks afterward.”
The Lower Shore Kickoff event aims to bring the community together to raise awareness about substance abuse recovery and the resources available. Officials say it’s important to spread support, as recovery looks different for everyone.
Trader said, “We’re out here combating stigma. We want to fight the negative perceptions — and, in some cases, the misperceptions — that people have about recovery and what it really is.” Willis added, “Recovery might look different for different people, but we’re here to support you in any way we can. We’re here to educate the community about substance misuse and mental health.”
The event will feature a variety of resources. “We’ll have information about recovery, where people can go for treatment or support services. The Shorebirds have been a great partner with us, and they’re going to auction off special purple jerseys,” said Trader.
There will also be plenty of purple spirit.
Chris Bitters, general manager of the Shorebirds, said, “Come on out. We’ll have a lot of fun, and we’ll end the Shorebirds season with a bang, with fireworks. But, again, we’re also bringing attention to the important cause we’re promoting.”
The event begins at 6:30 p.m. and is open to anyone who wants to get involved. The first pitch is at 7:05 p.m. Don’t forget to stay and enjoy the fireworks right after the game.
