Snow Hill officials to revitalize downtown with Bank Street Promenade project
SNOW HILL, Md. – An ongoing project in Snow Hill might make the downtown area even more special. The hope is to make it more accessible to a historic landmark.
Town officials are trying to revitalize its downtown, by connecting it to the Pocomoke River. They are calling it the Bank Street Promenade, and most of the project is funded.
The town is still in final applications to get more funding, as that’s being processed. The expectation is Bank Street could be a draw for community residents and visitors.
The slogan is ‘a place you travel to, not through.’ Hailey Winder works downtown, and she said most people don’t know what the area has to offer. “Going through here to Salisbury, or Pocomoke, and they don’t turn down here and see everything.”
The promenade would be built on Bank Street, between River and Willow Streets. Local businesses are pushing for the project’s completion. Many saying it would be the right thing to increase business.
Shanan Rogers, owner of Golden Clover Cafe, suggests the downtown area use the Pocomoke River. “It’s because the river is right here. We’re right next to the river, and it’s not far for people to go down there and sit. It’s right here.”
Ann Coates, who has owned Bishops Stocks for 23 years, and is a business neighbor, agrees, saying the project is for the best.
“People don’t even recognize that there is a river here, and they kind of just think it’s downtown. This will give them a visual and a pedestrian connection from the center of town to the river.”
She adds that residents of Snow Hill would be able to appreciate it too. “And I think people will be proud. You know, people who live downtown, don’t always come downtown, this may be something that brings them downtown,” said Coates.
