Salisbury Government Office Building Incident

SALISBURY, Md. — Wicomico County officials are considering security upgrades at the Government Office Building following a recent incident.

A 71-year-old Wicomico County man was arrested at the Government Office Building after allegedly shoving a security guard to reach the upper floors.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said, “He pushed this woman aside, attempting to board the elevator, which prompted a response by Wicomico County sheriff’s deputies who were nearby in the Circuit Court complex.”

To conduct business in the building, visitors must sign in with a valid ID. Lewis said the man refused to do so.

County Executive Julie Giordano said she believes the man was upset over a land dispute and did not comply with police questioning.

“I think the deputy did a very great job and said, ‘You’re either going to give me your name here or you’re going to give it to me in jail.’ And he was not having that,” she said.

Giordano said safety protocols will change at the building, though what those changes will look like remains to be seen.

“Our employees, they should feel safe here at work again. You should feel safe coming into the building,” Giordano said.

Sheriff Lewis added that it’s now in the court’s hands as to if they will move this case forward.
