Parkside student arrested after carrying a loaded hand gun

SALISBURY, Md. — An armed student caused a scare on the second day of classes at Parkside High School on Thursday.

Authorities said an 18-year-old student brought a loaded semiautomatic handgun to school. A school resource officer and other police responded immediately.

The student was taken into custody without incident and is cooperating with investigators, officials said. Classes continued as normal, and there is no threat to the school or the public.

Wicomico County Sheriff Mike Lewis said investigators are working to determine how the student obtained the firearm, since he is not old enough to purchase one. The student faces criminal charges.

“We’re exploring a few other options too because this was in a school environment, bringing in a loaded handgun on school property,” Lewis said. “Our detectives are working on further initial investigation now, which includes entering his home, conducting a search of the home and interviewing family members.”

The investigation is ongoing.
