Impact of the Cambridge Ironman

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – The dust has settled and the streets have cleared following the annual Ironman Maryland in Cambridge this past weekend.

We saw it on Friday as hundreds got their practices in before the Ironman, and as we found out, there were some pretty heavy numbers both in the race and when it came to those helping.

Over 1,500 athletes took part in the Ironman, with more than 1,100 volunteers helping out.

In fact, on September 16th, they only had around 800 volunteers. The last 300 signed up before Saturday.

And having that big of a leap for volunteer turnout is going to be huge for next year’s competitions.

“Because I did send out a thank you email and I have received a lot of great feedback from the volunteers who said they had a great experience and that they will be coming back next year,” says Race Organizer, Veronica Taylor.

With all of those volunteers, athletes, and their families visiting. that also means it’s a major financial impact for the city of Cambridge.

Everything, from restaurants, to rooms helped to generate this economic boost.

Taylor says, “It impacts not only those businesses, but locals, because they have an opportunity to to rent out rooms. They have space where they can do rentals of parking and so it is really not a really great economic vehicle…”

The next time Cambridge hosts an Ironman will be next spring, with the Ironman Eagleman.
