Former Wicomico County Superintendent dies at 85
SALISBURY, Md. – William T. “Bill” Middleton III, former educator and Wicomico County Superintendent, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 13.
Middleton was born and raised in Pittsville. He attended Salisbury State College for an associate’s degree in business administration. He later enrolled at University of Maryland College Park where he completed a bachelor’s degree and a master’s degree in business education. Middleton also served in the Army National Guard of Maryland and was honorably discharged in 1965 at the rank of Sergeant (E-5).
He participated in numerous professional organizations including serving as past chairman of the Maryland Professional Standards and Teachers Education Advisory Board. Additionally, Middleton was the past president of the Maryland/O.C. Association of School Business Officials, the Maryland Negotiation Service, and the Public School Superintendent’s Association of Maryland.
Middleton retired after 40 years with the Wicomico County Public School System, serving his last seven as Superintendent of Schools. After his retirement, Bill served as the Executive Director of O.U.R. Community Inc. and was on the Advisory Board of the Salisbury Horizons Student Program. He also served the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, with two terms as President of the Board of Directors, and served as a Superintendent Search Lead Consultant with the Maryland Association of Boards of Education. He recently was President of the Wicomico County AARP.
Middleton resided with his wife, Katherine, in Salisbury, Maryland. In addition to Katherine, he leaves behind his sons, Jeff and Keith; and his six grandchildren. He also leaves behind a cousin, Al Townsend.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 18, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 19, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home in Salisbury. A funeral service will be held Friday, Sept. 19, at 2:00 p.m. at Holloway Funeral Home. A burial will follow in Pittsville Cemetery.
