Dorchester Co. Goes Purple for Overdose Awareness

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Tuesday, community members and leaders, the Health Department, and even the town crier came together to paint the town purple.

As Dorchester County recognizes Overdose Awareness Month.

Shane Walker who’s been clean for nine years, says having a community lend a hand to those battling addiction is a good step forward.

Shane tells us, “Recognizing that these are the people in your community and that it’s okay to have you know, it’s called a disorder. And that’s a hard word for people to say. But seeing the community be a part of it this way and offering their support.”

Throughout September, the county is holding events, including 10 annual RecoveryWorks to Purple Pulpit Day in partnership with local churches.

Dorchester County Chamber of Commerce President, Bill Christopher says, “Yeah, that’s that’s really what it’s all about is getting the message out that, I mean, basically no one chooses to to be an addict or to do substance abuse. So this will make sure that people understand that they can go for help and get help.”

It’s all about providing the help that many need.

“Whether you’re an actively in addiction or you’re in whatever phase of recovery, whether you’re seeking help or just want resources, it’s a great way to just get information and have that connectedness,” says Dorchester County Substance Prevention Coordinator, Kirsten Hurley.

While Shane says, “It shedding a little bit of light on, you know, saying, hey, it’s okay to have a problem. There are people out there that can help you. Please take the steps that you deserve for that clean, sober life.”
