EXCLUSIVE: Delaware Gov. Matt Meyer visits Farmacy Market in downtown Milford

MILFORD, Del. – Delaware’s Governor, Matt Meyer, went to Milford to see a local business, with a focus on improving community health.
This is all part of his ‘Food is Medicine’ initiative. The Governor tells WMDT, farmers drive the Delaware economy. “We’re making food all over this state. Farming is one of Delaware’s largest economies, in some measure, it’s the largest generator of wealth in our state.”
Farmacy Market co-owner, Patrick Helmick, states the market’s purpose: quality produce, seafood, and meats for all.
Adding that you can only find unique ingredients and gourmet kitchen supplies at his shop.
“What you eat changes who you are and yourselves, so we want to make sure you’re getting the opportunity to consume the very best food possible.”
In the initiative, Governor Meyer has 3 priorities he wants to advance. Health equity, healthcare cost savings, and economic growth.
He was impressed with the healthy options at the market. Stating poor nutrition is at the core of many chronic negative health outcomes.
“Like much of the American population, its increasingly less unhealthy. Cancer, diabetes, hypertension, asthma, autism, are all these diseases that are spiking. We might have the answers right here for some people in our communities.”
WMDT is told by Helmick that local support makes for smooth business. “To get on your dinner table, from farm to table, the best food possible. And it’s only because of the amazing people who come and support us.”
The Food is Medicine Committee intends to use existing state models. And they also coincide with programs like the American Heart Association’s initiative.
