City of Cambridge Applying for Grant for Mace’s Lane

(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – An ongoing community project in the city of Cambridge may be closer to completion than many think, and it could lie in a state grant.

Monday, the Cambridge City Council is reviewing an application for $800,000. The money would come from a Community Development Building Grant (CDBG).

That grant would go towards work on the Mace’s Lane Community Center project.

Cambridge City Manager, Glenn Steckman says the Mace’s Lane Center is set to have all of its windows and doors installed by the end of October.

That being able to receive this $800,000 would help the Boys and Girls Club of Maryland, which is going to operate out of the center, hoping to open the facility in the next year.

“This is one of the final funding pieces that they know that they need. The Boys and Girls Club needs to bring this project to closure. It’s going to cost about total $15 million. But this amount of money plus some other things that they are working on allows the project to be completed,” says Steckman.

The community center project has been in the works since 2018, and the building has been empty since 2004.

This Community Development Grant would be able to make that revitalization a reality sooner than later.

Steckman tells us, “So I think it’s a win-win, and I think the community, after a long road, is going to be very happy.”

Steckman goes on to say should the city of Cambridge get that $800,000 building grant, the Boys and Girls Club of Maryland could open their doors in the center as early as the start of next summer.
