Butler’s Farm Market Closing After Nine Years
MARION STATION, Md. – Butler’s Farm Market and Orchard has been veteran and family owned & operated for the past nine years, but this weekend, they will close their doors for good.
The market that specializes in fresh produce and flowers announced in a Facebook post on Wednesday that they would be closing their doors, effective immediately. As costs continue to rise, the business stated they could no longer afford to stay open, writing, “We appreciate everyone’s support throughout the years and have met so many people from all over the world. We were praying that things would turn around, but this didn’t happen. We love all of you and thank you.”
In a statement to WMDT, Mike Butler, owner of Butler’s Farm Market, said that business started to slow last July. “In our industry, 90 percent of income is generated in the spring around Mother’s Day. That’s the time of year when most people are planning their gardens and buying floral arrangements.” But with a spring that brought torrents of rain early in the season, followed by record breaking high temperatures, the expected profits never came.
“I had to throw away about 3,000 hanging baskets because they just didn’t sell,” Mike said. His parents started the produce farm in 1980, but it was Mike and his wife, Tina Butler, that started the flower business almost a decade ago.
Upon posting their farewell message on Facebook, the comments were flooded with members of the community expressing their love for the market. The outpouring support has led Mike, Tina, and their dog Izzy, to open the market one last time this weekend. “We’re going to try to sell as much as possible tomorrow so we can recoup some of our losses, and hopefully try to open again in the spring,” he said ahead of their last day of business. “I wish it wasn’t happening, but it is.”
Butler’s Farm Market will be having a fire sale for their last day on Saturday, Sept. 6, and will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. All gift cards and gift certificates will be honored.
