Blood Bank of Delmarva to host sickle cell awareness blood drives
DELMARVA – September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month, and Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) is partnering with the Eastern Shore of Maryland Sickle Cell Association to host two blood drives to raise awareness of the disease and the importance of blood donation.
Sickle cell is an inherited red cell disorder that affects about 100,000 people in the U.S., most commonly African Americans, and millions worldwide. The disease causes red blood cells to clog small blood vessels, leading to excruciating pain episodes, severe organ damage, a life expectancy 20-30 years shorter than average. For many patients, regular blood transfusions are a true lifeline.
One in three African American blood donors is a match for a sickle cell patient. That’s why BBD and the Eastern Shore Sickle Cell Association are working together to raise awareness of the disease, the sickle cell trait, and the importance of a diverse blood supply. These blood drives come during an especially critical period, as summer travel and back-to-school season tend to make blood donation less of a priority. The most immediate way to help sickle cell patients, and so many others, is simple: donate blood. Every donation helps ensure patients have access to the lifesaving transfusions they depend on.
The first blood drive will take place at the Princess Anne Fire Hall on Sept. 8 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., while the second drive will take place at the Pocomoke Fire Station on Sept. 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
