After the Whistle: Washington’s Gladimir Maindron

PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Washington football’s Gladimir Maindron has learned to use his size to his advantage in the trenches. “I was 6’1″, 209 pounds coming into my freshman year. I’m currently 6’4″, 280 pounds,” he said.

But size isn’t his only asset.

“My versatility,” Maindron said of his greatest strength on the field, “Being able to play every single position on the line. If someone goes down, I know that I’m capable of playing that position. I’m confident in it.”

The senior lineman sees the path to the next level–his sights firmly set on earning a scholarship to play at the college level–so he’s laserfocused on honing his game: “I feel like I have a lot of room for improvement. So, in practice I’ll work on my technique. Run blocking, getting my hands inside, punching, getting that D-lineman.”

It was that motivation and attention to detail that on September 12th helped lift the Washington jaguars to a 16-6 victory over North East. It was the program’s first win under head coach Alec Meintzer, and it’s first time in the win column since 2019.

I feel like we all wanted it,” Maindron said. “Not winning from my freshman to my senior year, it’s humbling, you know. And getting that first win, it felt amazing.”

But for Maindron and the Jags, getting a taste has them starving for more. “Now I strive for more, and I want more. I’m not satisfied with just one win,” the senior captain said, adding, “We’re hungry. Really hungry. And we’ll do anything to get it.”

Washington sits at 1-2 so far this season, with a road game against Snow Hill coming up on Thursday, September 25 at 6 p.m.
