After the Whistle: Cape’s Avary Miller

LEWES, Del. – Cape Henlopen field hockey’s Avary Miller is relentless.

“I’m a player who never is really going to give up on a play. I think that that’s like my biggest aspect as a player. I never am going to not give my 100%. Playing against people like that who are so aggressive and never give up is really frustrating and is so tiring.”

As a junior in 2024, Miller helped pace a Vikings team that claimed its second straight Division 1 state title, with Miller earning first team all-state honors. But it’s the intangibles that she’s most proud of. “Last year I learned that I needed to be more of a leader on this team, when we graduated, I think 13 seniors the year before,” Miller said, “So like, having to step up into that role and be a leader was definitely a difficult one, but one that I think I was ready to take on.”

The University of Delaware commit has now fully embraced the role she fills for her teammates. “I love when they come up and ask me questions or ask me what they need to do differently at a certain time because like, seeing everybody want to get better is really exciting because obviously we want to be the best that we can be.”

As Miller begins her senior season with a three-peat in sight, the standard remains high, and she understands there are no shortcuts.”[We] just have to go to practice and get 1% better every single day as a team and as a person by myself. I need to get better. And I think that my ultimate goal would be to win a state championship and have an undefeated season,” she said.

The Vikings begin their season hosting Queen Anne’s County High School and Stephen Decatur on September 5 and 6 in the Bi-State Challenge.
