Salisbury’s Buffalo Soldiers chapter are teaching local students’ history

HEBRON, Md. – The Salisbury Chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers has been teaching kid’s local history throughout the week. It culminated with a trip to a local farm, Secret Prides Stables in Hebron.

The Thomas E. Polk Sr. Buffalo Soldiers continues its mission by promoting important history and enabling youth to learn about the courage of African American men. Many of whom faced discrimination and segregation in the U.S. Army.

Chapter President Althea Chandler said they taught the kids valuable lessons.

“We taught them about some famous Buffalo Soldiers, Charles Young, and the only known female Buffalo Soldier, Cathy Williams.”

Seeing the children ride horses, something many had never done, excited Chandler. “They had never been close to a horse before, so we thought it would be a very important part of the summer program, since the Buffalo Soldiers rode horses.”Img 3387

For the children, they said riding the horses was life-changing.

“It felt amazing, not scared, but it actually felt great. I didn’t feel nervous at all.”

The Buffalo Soldiers are known for their bravery and resilience, and Chandler hopes the kids take that with them as they enter another school year.

“At least 7 of them signed up, they want to become Junior Buffalo Soldiers and do activities all throughout the year. So that’s encouraging for us.”
