law enforcement say limiting information on social media can keep kids safe during back-to-school season

DELMARVA. – It’s back to school season, which means kids are getting ready to hit that first day of school pose.

But before you upload any pictures to social media, law enforcement are warning parents against putting out too much information.

It’s common to see kids posing with signs that have their name, age and school they’re attending. But detective corporal Jon Marton-Rollins said that can make you and your child a target for exploitation and identity theft.

“What I ask is that people, don’t think about your own privacy settings, because sometimes people do well at locking down, but think about two or three people separated from you,” said Marton-Rollins. “Your grandmothers, or aunts, or uncles who might share this stuff out, who, again, they’re well-intentioned, but they’re not thinking about those security concerns.”

He added you should avoid using your child’s first and last name in the social media post. It’s also smart to leave out what school they attend.
