Free parking in Berlin may soon be a thing of the past

BERLIN, Md. — America’s Coolest Small Town may face more complicated parking in the near future.

Last night, the Berlin Town Council met to discuss the potential implementation of paid parking. The issue was raised by Mayor Zack Tyndall, who said a lot on Washington Street will eventually need to be metered.

We spoke with several local businesses; not all of them wanted to go on camera, but many expressed concerns about the difficulty of finding parking. One business owner shared additional concerns:

“It’s going to make it harder for people to come to work, especially since many who arrive early to get parking spots work at the bank or other businesses nearby. I think it will just be harder for them. They’ll have to walk further, and while it may generate more tax revenue for the town of Berlin on weekends, I think there are probably better ways to handle it,” the owner said.

The town of Berlin will hold a merchant meeting Wednesday at 8:30 a.m. to discuss the issue further.
