For sale: the old Snow Hill fire station, a massive property in the heart of town.

SNOW HILL, Md. – A historic landmark in Snow Hill is for sale. For 75 years, the property was known as the Snow Hill Fire Company’s headquarters. Around 14,000 square feet and only feet from the Pocomoke River.

The West Green Street property has plenty of amenities to boot, like a kitchen, a garage, and multi-purpose rooms. Since January, however, the property has been left vacant. It was occasionally used for town events, but had to be stopped because of the structure not being up to code.

The vacancy has left some downtown business owners concerned. Joseph Delvecchio runs the popular ‘Del Vecchio Bakery’ along with his father, John. Joseph is hoping the old firehouse can get a new caretaker sooner rather than later.

“I love looking at old buildings myself, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a draw for the town. So I think having a business in there would be more beneficial than not.”

James Chartier of ‘Hansen’s Craftery’ agreed. While he has faith, the town will get it sold. He understands that in business, the longer it takes, the more likely he is to lose potential foot-traffic.

“They’ve talked about events and breweries, maybe something that would bring multiple large groups into town for an extended period,” said Chartier. “Something that would help out the businesses, because once you get people in town, they’re gonna walk around.”

Bryan Coates and Clint Bickford are the listing agents for the old firehouse. Both have ties to the Snow Hill, and both have the desire to sell the $325,000 space to the right buyer. Coates expressed that desire to WMDT, saying the right person will make the biggest difference.

“For us to list it, it’s not only a mark on our real estate page, but it’s a real sense of pride for us.” Coates adds that while vacancies can be bad for downtown business, he doesn’t necessarily look at it from that perspective.

“Vacancies can be a problem, but we don’t look at them like that, we look at it as opportunities. Right now, the firehouse is a very big opportunity.”

The Fritschle Barker Group at Keller Williams will be selling the property.
