SEAFORD, Del. – This past weekend was the 30th Eastern Shore AFRAM Festival, and for the past 30 years, the organizers and community members have been pushing their message, “We Are One. ”

Acknowledging African Americans

Since 1995, the Eastern Shore African American Cultural Festival has been held in Seaford, Delaware. Organizer Pat “PJ” Jones says these events are entertaining and educational. That’s why she’s honored to serve.

“Well, it’s an opportunity for us to show the success of African Americans… It has been a heartbeat of mine because I have a passion for people. And I’ve always served, I feel like that’s a gift from God. So, to serve in this capacity has really been rewarding…I love the food, I get to meet new people, I get to have an opportunity to invite small businesses out, so that they can network with the community.”

Diversity in Unity

For years, hundreds of people of all ages, races, and religions have come out to attend, like the Spicer Family. They’ve attended this event many times before and say it’s important to support the community.

“One, we came out to support Pat and the endeavors, but two, I think it’s important to build a sense of community and show up to events that are happening in our area. I think, on another level, I think what’s going on currently in our country, I think it’s important to show a sense of community and solidarity with one another.”

Resources and Rehabilitation

From Greek lettered organizations to First State Community Action, Tidal Health and the Seaford Police Department, all of these various organizations were there to help point people in the right directions. Keisha Shreeves and he daughter BriKeisha are members of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and Keisha says she believes in unity

“I believe in community service; I believe in togetherness. I believe the youth of today need to understand what the world is all about. It’s not about black and white, it’s about being together coming as one. And together we’re better.”

Organizers say they are looking for fresh ideas after 30 years, contact Pat Jones at 302-228-5636 to help out next year.
