Dr. Griffith Batstone is Helping People Suffering with Enlarged Prostate
SALISBURY, Md. — Health Beat sponsored by TidalHealth visited Dr. Griffith Batstone this week, a urologist in Salisbury. Health Beat airs every Monday on WMDT’s Good Morning Delmarva.
Among many other services, Dr. Batstone’s practice at 1664 Woodbrooke Drive, Suite B, in Salisbury, specializes in HoLEP surgery to treat BPH (benign prostate hyperplasia) — more commonly known as enlarged prostate.
Prostate obstruction affects a man’s ability to urinate. HoLEP is a laser surgery option with no incision. Dr. Batstone highly recommends the procedure to help men improve their quality of life.
Dr. Batstone went to Cambridge University in England for medical school and urology residency.
“I did a medical PhD looking at benign prostate diseases, specifically prostatitis and immunology,” says Dr. Batstone. “For the last 18 years, I’ve been working in Maine; I moved to TidalHealth in 2024 and we are setting up a department here in Salisbury.”
HoLEP is Holmium, Laser and Enucleation of the Prostate. The procedure removes all benign adenoma tissue from the prostate and surgical capsule of the prostate.
“So, if you have an obstruction from an enlarged prostate, it’s like an orange where the orange is the obstruction and the peel is the surgical capsule,” says Dr. Batstone. “The HoLEP cores out the entire orange from the peel, then we cauterize the blood vessels from the capsule of the prostate. This procedure is very good for treating enlarged prostate.”
Dr. Batstone says symptoms of enlarged prostate include urine retention, recurrent urinary tract infections, bladder stones and bleeding from the prostate. Obstructive symptoms include slow urine stream, frequent urination, urinary urgency and sometimes a feeling of an incomplete bladder emptying.
Dr. Batstone says HoLEP is a great treatment option because it comes with minimal side effects, a speedy recovery, has long-term success and is very effective at alleviating issues related to enlarged prostate.
“The other benefit is you’re going to get less bleeding, so you’re much less likely to need the catheter for a long period of time,” says Dr. Batstone. “You’re much less likely to need to have the catheter re-inserted after the procedure, and less likely to need a blood transfusion afterward.”
