Delaware Leaders Break Ground in Harrington
(HARRINGTON, Del) – A project that’s been in talks in Harrington for decades is taking a major step forward.
The first shovels of dirt are being lifted out of the ground by Delaware Republicans and Democrats alike; signaling the start of the new Harrington Industrial Park.
The city’s mayor, Frank Tolson is excited about the prospects this facility will bring to the city.
Mayor Tolson says, “This has been a long time coming. It is a monumental day. We’ve earned the property since 1987 and we are finally breaking ground on it.”
It’s an effort that’s gone all the way to the United States Senate to finally earn approval for construction.
After its only been in discussion for nearly 40 years.
Delaware State Senator, David Lawson tells us, “Harrington has been kind of wilting and stagnant for years. And all of a sudden now it’s it’s starting to hit its own with really good city leadership.”
“Bringing home money for Delaware, working with the state representatives, with the city government, with the community around here is an important part of our working across the aisle and addressing one of the big challenges our communities face, which is how do we have high quality jobs for the future…” says Delaware U.S. Senator, Chris Coons.
The new industrial park would create over 700 new jobs as well as potentially create up to 1,000 new homes.
Mayor Tolson calling it the shot in the arm that Harrington needs.
He says, “It’s going to be good for our taxpayers. It’s going to be good for all the businesses around here. That’s going to be a record, many people, and it’s going to boost the economy here in Harrington.”
This industrial park is the result of a nearly three and a half million dollar federal grant.
