DCPS Improving in MD Rankings
(CAMBRIDGE, Md) – Dorchester County is preparing to get back to school, and they’re starting to gain some momentum with a big campaign.
Their “23 No More” Campaign is seeing success.
It’s an effort to try and raise their ranking in the state of Maryland.
Currently, they sit at 23rd out of 24 school districts in the state.
Superintendent Dr. Jymil Thompson tells us eighth graders are looking at being ranked in the mid-to-upper teens for English and Language Arts proficiency.
And, students in Dorchester County ranked 12th in state math assessments, one of their highest rankings to date.
Dr. Thompson tells us, “I think that we have this momentum. And I think we have to just keep working hard to continue the trend that we’re directing. But it’s very, very good to see when we have people coming together believing in the same thing and the kids are able to perform.”
Dr. Thompson also said that bringing Dorchester County into the top 15 in Maryland is going to be a community effort. Saying he wants to make sure no matter which school a student attends, they’re getting the same quality education.
Dr. Thompson said they need to keep the current momentum going.
He says, “Because I know there’s at times parents feel like ‘they’re hiding or you’re feeling like that there’s different set of rules for different people.’ So we want to be consistent with everything we do across the board. We know we’ve got a lot of work to do to earn their trust, but I think we’re going to we’re I think that we’re trending in the right direction.”
Dr. Thompson says they are far from the end goal of “23 No More”.
They’re going to be pushing it with the school year starting very soon. The goal is to rank within the top 15 in a three year period.
