Bayside of Eastern Shore to see Impacts of Hurricane Erin
(CRISFIELD, Md) – The effects of Hurricane Erin aren’t just impacting the coastal side of the Peninsula.
Signs of weather picking up in Somerset County have been seen around Crisfield Thursday,
The high winds, and the choppy waters, are just a few of things communities that border the Chesapeake Bay are dealing with.
Somerset County Assistant Emergency Management Director, Scott Hopkins says, “We’re looking at moderate flooding potentially on the high tide of tonight. Tonight, we are looking at a lower end of the moderate flooding for the Crisfield area. And then Friday night, about midnight is going to be a little bit more in the moderate area.”
Officials are especially urging drivers to avoid flooded areas.
“…Turn around and don’t drown. Watch the roadways. Try not to travel unless necessary and avoid the roadways when they’re flooded. You don’t realize how deep the water is,” says Hopkins.
And high winds may cause some problems for those on the roads, regardless of whether they’re in a car or on the sidewalk.
Hopkins tells us, “We’re also looking at wind approximately 30, 35 miles per hour, wind gusts to exceed that. So we need to look for downed wires, downed trees, and try to just avoid any type of objects that could be overhead.”
Somerset County Emergency Management is heavily advising people that if roads are starting to flood over the next day or so, that they make sure to find detours and have them planned out in advance.
