Wor- Wic Community College addresses Maryland’s driver shortage

SALISBURY, Md. – A local college is trying to help with the truck driver shortage in Maryland.

Wor-Wic Community College recently received funding from the Maryland Department of Labor and U.S. Department of Commerce to provide scholarships for commercial driver’s license (CDL) and heavy equipment operator courses.

The truck driver shortage in Maryland is a significant issue, with the state facing a tight labor market for drivers, with over 115,000 vacant jobs. Wor-Wic Community College has the heavy equipment operator course, which is free through the grant.

Wor- Wic is receiving grant funds so they can offer training for heavy equipment operators or CDL. The 10-week course teaches participants to operate a backhoe, bulldozer, mini excavator and skid steer loader. Seats are limited, and the course starts Aug. 4th, and CDL classes begin Aug. 18th.

Scholarships are available to help pay for the course through the grant. For information about the CDL and heavy equipment operator courses call 410-334-2922 or contact mmiciotto@worwic.edu.
