Weather Tidbits: Can a Cup of Coffee Predict the Weather?
We’ll be discussing the folklore behind predicting weather using a cup of coffee in this edition of Weather Tidbits. Here’s what the folklore says. If high pressure is in place across the area, then the height of the center of the coffee in the cup will lower a bit and the bubbles within the coffee will move toward the center. High pressure is generally associated with fair weather. If low pressure is in place, the height flattens and the bubbles move toward the edges of the cup within the coffee. Low pressure is often associated with unsettled weather. The truth is, this is not very accurate. Many factors impact bubble formation, including the shape of the cup, coffee temperature, the type of coffee, and even how you stir your coffee. There just is not enough valid proof to give this folklore much merit.
