University of Delaware’s Hugh R. Sharp research vessel recently renovated

NEWARK, Del. – An important research vessel for the University of Delaware has gotten a major overhaul.

The Hugh R. Sharp is now 19 years old and officials with the University of Delaware say the vessel was due for its midlife maintenance.

The Sharp is one of 17 ships throughout the country that are operated by universities to conduct oceanographic research throughout the globe.

The ship has also hosted several student experiences to provide experiential education at sea.

In addition to refurbishing the hull, they took out the main propulsion system and had it refurbished, as well as upgraded some of the engine components and generators on board.

“The Sharp is an amazing asset for the University of Delaware and for Delmarva in general,” said David Walter, Director of Marine Operations for the University of Delaware. “We allow scientists from all over the country come out and do some amazing research looking at marine mammals, looking at how different water chemistries can affect the fisheries in the area.”

Future tours of the Sharp will take place at University of Delaware’s Coast Day in Lewes Sunday, October 5th.
