Seniors reflect on fair favorites, memories at Delaware State Fair

HARRINGTON, Del. – Monday marked Seniors’ Day at the Delaware State Fair.

WMDT’s Blake Lipton spent the afternoon talking to seniors about their favorite parts of the festivities.

“We really enjoy going through the animal pens and looking at the horses and the pigs and the sheep, that’s one of our favorites,” said Heidi Borys.

Borys and her husband are going on 10 years at the Delaware State Fair, but for them it’s not only a chance to check out the livestock, but also to make memories.

“There was a bull ride one year and each of our grandkids rode that and had a great time and, I was just saying when we were getting ready to leave, the policemen on horseback were on, people walking by and it was just a really beautiful site to see them,” said Borys.

For most seniors we spoke with, this isn’t their first rodeo. Many have gone to the Delaware State Fair for more than a decade.

“If it gets to be good weather we love that, but we come down on Seniors’ Day to be able to see all of the things at the beginning of the fair, the animal husbandry barns, we enjoy going into them and also eating some of the food here,” said Jim Erb. “Sonny’s Fries is one of our favorites, so we go there every year.”

Pamela Budd also has fond memories of the fair.

“This is where we were when my niece said that she had found her wedding dress and just being able to meet your friends neighbors up here, we’re from Salisbury, but we still see everybody we know,” she said.

Erb said while it’s a fun time for someone his age, he loves seeing the younger generation fall in love with the fair.

“Watching the kids, really the kids have such a great time here and parents taking their kids out to the fair is a big deal in Delaware and we enjoy coming here,” he said.

Tuesday, the Delaware State Fair will host its Kids’ Day.
