SCPS transitioning from uniforms to dress code for upcoming school year

WESTOVER, Md. – Somerset County Public Schools making a significant change for the upcoming school year.

Student uniforms will no longer be required for students in the school system.

Instead, the Somerset County Board of Education has adopted a systemwide student dress code that must be adhered to.

According to Somerset County Public Schools, the change comes after a review of current practices and community feedback.

“We wanted to provide students with more choice in what they wear, while still ensuring that the expectations for respectful and appropriate attire are clear,” said Victoria Green with Somerset County Public Schools. “Many of our families share that while uniforms offer consistency, they also presented challenges related to cost, availability and student comfort.”

School staff is receiving guidance on consistent, respectful enforcement of the dress code.
