Our Town Revisited: Town of Hebron

HEBRON, Md. – It’s time for Our special series Our Town revisited we’re visiting the town of Hebron.

Town of Hebron: 1999

Hebron had become a bedroom community to Salisbury. With a population of around 700, at one time, Hebron was a busy place. Former WMDT anchor and reporter Kelley Rouse took a look at a part of Hebron’s past and had this to say.

It’s assumed Hebron got its name from the bible. the town was incorporated in 1890.
that’s when the railroad arrived and times were busy.

The bounds lumber mill supplied everything the marvel packing company needed to
make crates and baskets to ship produce to big cities. Hebron was then, as it is now, a farming town.

Town manager Janet Schlesinger says tons of food headed for Philadelphia or Baltimore by rail. “As you can see by the pictures, I mean it was a tremendous amount of sweet potatoes, corn, anything that went to the markets.”

After the marvel package factory burned, and the train stopped running 25 years ago,
life wasn’t the same in Hebron, except for the one thing that some folks say counts the most.

It’s a tight-knit town. everybody knows just about everyone, and Schlesinger admits “They’re close. There are a lot of families who have married into other families and stayed here. But they’re very close. They may have their little tiffs…But when push comes to shove, they’re right there.”

Town of Hebron: 2025

Over 25 years later, I had the chance to go back to that tiny town, to seed what a long-lasting impact they have made in Wicomico County.

8 to 10 Square miles, 1100 residents, and about 500 homes. That’s all that makes up this quaint Little Maryland town called Hebron. Incorporated in 1890, it’s said its name can be found in the good book, and the town, is full of good people too.

Born & Raised

Clyde Church has been the Town’s Water & Waste Operator for the past 11 years. “I was born and raised here, I love the town, of course now I’m working for the town, so just trying to do my best.”

And he says, he has a very important duty. “Make sure water comes to the residence, and make sure the water leaves the residence. That’s a major part of it.”

Town Attraction

The town includes a Pizzeria, a convenience store, and a place to bring your pups. The current town hall was the town original bank- which was moved across the street in the early 1900s. Church says there has been mostly revamping of the town. They still have their fire house just new equipment, and people nowadays are more fluid.

“The only real thing I think that’s got added new is the pharmacy, we now have a pharmacy in the town. I’d say more renters here now then there were back 25 years ago, it was probably more of what I call private owned homes. People that lived there for a long time, so you got to know a lot of people. and now it’s just in and out in. and out so it’s hard to keep the relationships with the people.”

Past and Potential

Back then, many goods went out by rail. and though the track isn’t in use anymore, he says there are still things they take pride in in this town.

“Probably, the star point of Hebron is our school district, Mardela. And they’re rated as one of the top-rated schools in the area. So, that’s one of the reasons a lot of people like to get in the Hebron area, or the Hebron district anyhow.”

He says Hebron is Salisbury’s overflow, and it can thrive just as much. “I believe that it’s the outskirts push of Salisbury, so I think there’s potential, there’s potential growth for the town.”

The town says they do have various events and program that happen from time to time, and if you’re interested or want to know more about the area, visit their website.
